As a student teacher I have been incredibly fortunate in the role models I have been given. The amount of knowledge I have been lucky enough to gain from them is quite extensive. Through their instruction and my personal experience I have been able to develop my own teaching philosophy which reflects what I believe about teaching, learning and my beliefs as a teacher.
I believe that all students can learn and that it is the job of the teacher to ensure that their needs are being met. There are many different types of learners and the lessons and assignments should facilitate to all of these learners. This being said I believe that the students should be given many times to practice and master the concepts before summative evaluation is given. Giving assessment through the course of the learning process is extremely important in my opinion. I think that knowing students work and learn at different speeds should be taken into account during this “practice” period. This being said, I think that descriptive feedback with specificity in what can be improved upon is important for the learner. If the student knows they got something wrong or had marks taken off but do not know why then the opportunity for improvement and learning is lost in that moment.
I fall into the Learner Centred category for teaching ideologies and think that using students' personal experiences to ignite interest is highly important. I think using the interests and strengths of the classroom can make students more engaged because they can use their own passions integrated into what the lesson is based on. For example, when I was in my Ed-2500 course we were working on a unit on poetry. One young gentleman thought that it wasn't manly and was not interested in writing poetry because of that. To solve this problem I used that knowledge that he love BMX biking and explained to him how he could use his love of biking in poetry. This caught his attention quickly and he set of to work shortly after that.
I hope to be able to interpret the nuances of the curriculum into something exciting and inspirational for the students. I want to make the classroom somewhere that the students feel safe to express themselves as well as develop a sense of community between myself and the students as well the students with each other. I hope to make everyone feel included and help every single student feel like they can achieve anything through hard work and optimism. I plan to develop a personal relationship with every student so that I can use their personal passions to help excite them about whatever we happen to be working on. I believe that having a relationship and know ALL the names of the students is a very good classroom management technique that can solve issues before they become larger than they need to be.
It is my goal to make a connection with the parents of the students as to have them involved and invested in their children learning. I like the idea of a weekly email or agenda writing to tell the parents what is coming up and how their child is doing. Having the parents involved will help them motivate their children when they are at home. I would also like to have my students have a sense of a greater community than just the classroom. I hope to achieve this through community involvement such as having guest speakers from the community come in as well as having the students take field trips to places such as the Food Bank. I think these activities can help shape my students into caring, thoughtful youth with a view on other people than themselves. I also plan on getting advice from and mentorship from the team at my school as to learn from their experience and in turn further my own.
Like I said before all students can learn and I hope to be the teacher that makes sure that this is possible. I want nothing more than the success and happiness of my classroom and will further my own knowledge constantly through professional development to ensure that my students are receiving the best education that I can provide for them.
